This year we decided to spend our spring break in one of the most beautiful Islands of Spain, namely Mallorca.
Mallorca, is part of the Balearic Islands as is Ibiza, Formentera and Menorca located in the Mediterranean Sea. This Mediterranean Island, an archipelago of Spain is a much loved travel destination among (us sun deprived ;) North Europeans.
The location, a short 2.5 hours flight from Amsterdam makes it perfect for (short) holidays when you only have 2 to 7 days off. We love the delicious Spanish cuisine, which is a mix of fresh seafood, local vegetables and fruits and tasteful seasoned dishes. Bright sunny days and approximately a 50 km coastline of beautiful beaches surrounded by crystal clear turquoise sea water.
As we only had one week off, we wanted to make the most out of it and an European destination was the best (last minute) choice. A trip to the South of France was also an option, however the weather forecast was about 20 degrees at it’s best this May and we had our sights set on a sunny destination with at least 25 degrees. This to be able to explore the island, relax by the beach and enjoy long warm evenings and dining out at night. This trip was our first to Mallorca and although we searched Google for all the things to see while visiting Mallorca, we were lucky to have met Anna on our flight over. A local from Mallorca who confirmed to us which places where a ‘must see’. She recommended a few beaches and villages that are among the most beautiful and picturesque of the island which are worth the visit.
BEST WAY AND TIME TO TRAVEL
The best way to travel is to book a flight to Palma de Mallorca, the capital. Departing from Barcelona or one of the other Balearic Islands, it is also possible to book a ferry, but from Barcelona it will take you about 8 hours. Renting a car is advised if you feel like visiting surrounding villages, take a hike in the mountains or lay on Mallorca’s finest beaches scattered across the Island. Palma de Mallorca’s capital is best travelled by foot and for sightseeing take the (Hop-on Hop-Of) Bus.
We arrived on the 27th of May and it was about 23 to 26 degrees during our stay, which was very pleasant for the time of year. If you are looking for warmer days and don’t mind a few extra tourists, I would recommend visiting the island from the midst of June, July till August as temperatures can sore up to plus 30 degrees with a nice sea breeze to cool you off.
PLACES TO VISIT
According to Anna, we had to see Valdemossa and Fornalutx, authentic Mallorca villages that are beautiful and a representation of Mallorca architectural style. The best lookout points are Sa Calobra, Cap de Formentor and for a swim in turquoise glistering sea water you can visit Port de Sóller, Can Picafort and Es Trence. To name a few, there are many more magical places on the island to explore. As we only had six days, we will not rule out going back one day for a mini-break and see all that we had to skip.
DRESS STYLE
Many of the Mediterranean islands are have picturesque narrow streets on rocky landscapes with towering cliffs. You will be doing lots of sightseeing on pebbled roads and strolling along the boulevards and ongoing beaches. This means that there will be a lot of walking up and down the hills and good shoes are recommended. This seasons white trainers are recommended, as they are perfect for long stylish walks. Pair them with cropped jeans, palazzo flared pants or flirty dresses. For diner, a lovely pair of leather sandals with straps or wedges are a great choice and thumps up to all the ladies defying the pebbled streets on heels. Not me, but I am prepared to let that fashion moment slide, to make sure I reach the end of the street unscratched ;)
To match the beautiful scenery going for neutrals and pastels is a great choice, but a touch of color is also nice as it’s nice to see the vibrant contrast with the stoney scenery. I would say, wear whatever you feel like as long as it’s fits your unique style. I took a suitcase full of both neutrals and colourful pieces. Rocked the most colourful for Palma de Mallorca city tour and neutrals for the villages and beaches we visited. My suitcase was filled with loose jumpsuits, feminine strappy dresses, silk cami tops, a denim jacket, jeans and skirts. I believe I took it all with me and now, afterwards I can honestly say that I packed too much! I could have left with a semi empty suitcase and shopped my suitcase full as there were many beautiful boutiques that left me longing to go back.
WHERE TO STAY
Luck was on our side as we found a (very last minute) wonderful guesthouse on AirBnB located in Biniali. Centered in the middle of Mallorca and about 20 minutes from the airport. We stayed in the guesthouse of Peter our English host, does speak fluent Spanish. We had a warm welcome, the guesthouse was lovely and fully equipped with our own kitchen, large bathroom and living. Our decision was based on the many highly positive reviews and the pictures were not bad at all. A (heated) swimming pool, tennis court, quiet natural surroundings with lots of orange and palm trees. Simply stunning!
If you are planning a short visit, booking a stay in Palma de Mallorca is a good choice. There are lots of luxurious stays in (boutique) hotels or adorable Bed & Breakfasts located at the centre which is a great base for historical sightseeing and strolling down the boulevard in Port de Mallorca.
I think it is a great destination for an extended weekend (shopping trip) as it’s only 2.5 hours aways, it has culture, a lively city centre, excellent cuisine, mesmerising beaches and gorgeous views. Hope you enjoyed my travel post and love to hear about your experience of Mallorca.
